Being a Latina in Hollywood has always meant battling stereotypes. For decades, the only roles available were those of sex symbols created to fulfill the fantasies of male directors. Few understand this better than Sofía Vergara.

Like many women in the industry, Sofía had to seize every opportunity to build her career and become one of the highest-paid actresses. But this success came with a price: hypersexualization, condescension, and objectification.

That’s why watching her stand up for herself and flip the script in interviews is so satisfying.

In a resurfaced interview from October 2023, Sofía Vergara did just that while speaking with her former co-star, Kevin Hart. On Peacock’s “Hart to Heart,” the two reminisced about Soul Plane, their first movie together, and how much has changed since then.

Hart described the film as a “pivotal moment” in his career. In response, Sofía delivered a line that only a woman—unfortunately—would understand in Hollywood.

“I didn’t even know who you were until I saw the movie,” Sofía says casually, holding a glass of wine. “I was like, ‘Oh my God, this guy is amazing.’”

Then, with the same carefree energy often seen in male interviewers, she adds, “And you were so much more handsome at the time, remember? And younger, fresher.”

“But you’re doing great,” she concludes.

Hart’s face said it all—men wouldn’t last a second under the kind of scrutiny women in Hollywood face.

“I thought you were in a space of compliment, and then, boom, it just went down,” he said, clearly unsettled. Though Sofía insists it was a compliment, Hart’s pride had already taken a hit.

Hart tried to defend himself, claiming he still feels young. Sofía responded with the undeniable truth: “I’m not lying. It’s a fact. You were younger 20 years ago.”

To soften the blow, Sofía, like many women, found herself flipping the script back onto herself to ease Hart’s bruised ego.

“I’m 50 now,” she said. “I was, like, fresh at that time.” While Hart reassured her she looks great, she countered, “But I’m 50. Inside, I feel like I’m younger, but everything [hangs].”

In the end, Sofía Vergara gave Kevin Hart a taste of what it feels like to be a woman in Hollywood—and we love seeing it.
