Selena Gomez Let Benny Blanco Do Her Makeup—The Results Are…Something
On March 6, Selena Gomez became the latest celeb to join the “let your partner do your makeup” trend. The Rare Beauty founder took to Instagram to show her 421 million followers what happened when she let fiancé Benny Blanco do her makeup.
While Blanco’s attempt was hilarious to watch, the main takeaway is how underappreciated and underrated the art of makeup is!
What happens when you let your significant other do your makeup? Selena Gomez found out
Stars, influencers, and content creators have repeatedly explored this question online. Results have seen various degrees of success, but the idea remains the same. Women (mostly) ask their makeup-uninitiated partners to glam them up. More often than not, the partners struggle, misname things, and are, to put it simply, lost.
Music producer Benny Blanco was no exception. In a video shared on Instagram, Blanco’s fiancé, Selena Gomez, put his makeup skills to the test. Blanco’s task was simple: completing Selena’s glam with Rare Beauty products.
Benny Blanco soon discovered the universe of makeup tools and products
Like many who are unfamiliar with makeup, Blanco started by trying to apply pressed powder with his fingers. Thankfully, he traded his hands with brushes next and applied the product on Gomez’s face rather instinctively. The process and result were more or less adequate.
The challenge, however, started when he reached out for Rare Beauty’s newest product: the Soft Pinch Liquid Contour. I think it’s safe to state we all saw the fear in his fiancée’s eyes.
Benny Blanco Vs. The Contour
Things quickly took a turn as Blanco discovered he was about to apply contour. “What am I contouring? he asked, half amused, half confused. As Gomez seemed to predict based on her expression, he then proceeded to smear a little too much product on her cheeks. And yes, if you’re acquainted with makeup, you know that’s generally the spot for blush. He attempted to blend the long lines without much success.
In between, Blanco repeated things like “I always see you do stuff like it” and “Why isn’t it doing nothing? When you do it, it looks so good.” True, we all use Selena Gomez as our personal beauty guru.
An Unexpected Ending?
The internet agrees that the lip oil application that followed was more or less smooth. Blanco seemed to be on the right track when he applied highlighter on the cheeks, nose tip, and chin. However, he wrapped up his fiancée’s look with an unexpected twist. He took an orange shade of the Positive Light Silky Touch Highlighter and smeared it on Gomez’s jaw. The idea, he claimed, was to “highlight the jawline.”
Blanco topped it all off with setting spray and a “You look so hot” that, judging by Gomez’s face, she didn’t buy.
The Verdict? Makeup is an art form
Now, the interaction was clearly for fun, and the internet is loving it! However, the main takeaway is that makeup is an art form, and not just anyone can master it.
While there’s much debate about makeup’s purpose and ultimate goal—many overlook it as superficial or useless—the truth is that glamming up can be a powerful tool for self-expression—some might even say it is an art form.
Blanco’s trial at makeup encourages those of us who are not skilled in the area not to give up and keep trying. It also shows those who look down on makeup that there are techniques, knowledge, and a lot of practice behind every good makeup look.
