Vanessa Guillen’s sister, Mayra Guillen, is making headlines again—but this time, it’s not for activism. Instead, she’s teasing a potential run for Congress in Texas’ 9th Congressional District. In fact, she’s setting her sights on unseating Democratic Representative Al Green in the U.S. House of Representatives.

The move comes after Green was censured and ejected from the House chamber for disrupting former President Donald Trump’s address. Mayra Guillen, a longtime advocate for military families, took to social media to express her frustration. She called Green’s actions a disrespect to their district, state, and country.

Vanessa Guillen’s Sister Says She’s “Getting Into the Fight”

On March 6, Mayra Guillen announced on X (formerly Twitter) that she is seriously considering running against Green.

“After watching @RepAlGreen disrespect not only @POTUS last night, but our district, state, and country, I believe it’s time for me to get into the fight like I did for my sister Vanessa Guillen!” she wrote.

She also expressed her support for Trump’s administration, adding, “It’s time to end the propaganda displayed by these politicians, and time to help support @POTUS and his amazing Admiration to Make America Great Again! Al Green, I’m coming for your seat.”

From Seeking Justice for Vanessa to a Possible Political Career

Mayra Guillen rose to national prominence after the tragic murder of her sister, Army Specialist Vanessa Guillen, who was bludgeoned to death at Fort Cavazos (formerly Fort Hood) in 2020. Her brutal killing exposed the military’s deep-rooted issues with sexual harassment and misconduct, sparking national outrage and leading to policy reforms, including an executive order signed by President Biden making sexual harassment an offense under the Uniform Code of Military Justice (UCMJ).

Since then, Mayra has been a vocal advocate for military reform, immigrant rights, and justice for families like hers. According to Immigration360Law, she has been actively involved in organizations supporting immigrant service members, speaking at conferences, and using her platform to demand change.

Mayra Guillen Praises Trump’s Response to Her Sister’s Murder

Though Mayra hasn’t officially declared her candidacy, her recent posts suggest she aligns with Trump and Republican politics. She credited the former president for his response to Vanessa Guillen’s murder, which included meeting with her family at the White House in 2020 and expressing support for their push for military accountability.

This shift toward conservative politics is raising eyebrows, considering Democratic lawmakers have traditionally supported much of her advocacy work, particularly around immigration.

Could Vanessa Guillen’s Sister Unseat Al Green?

Al Green has represented Texas’ 9th Congressional District since 2005 and has been a prominent figure in Democratic politics. His district, which includes parts of Houston, is heavily Democratic, making a Republican challenger’s path to victory an uphill battle.
