From the Stage to the Stadium: Becky G Recognized as a Game-Changer in Sports
Becky G has spent more than a decade making waves in the music industry. Now, she’s redefining representation in sports. On March 14, 2025, Latinos in Sports™ (LiS) honored Becky G with the Pionera Award. The organization recognized her leadership as a co-owner of Angel City FC, Los Angeles’ first professional women’s soccer team.
The event, held at Loyola Marymount University, brought together top Latino athletes, executives, and cultural leaders to recognize the growing impact of Latinos in sports. The awards celebrated 30 Latino figures shaping the business of sports. Furthermore, the event highlighted the role of Latinos as fans, decision-makers, and industry leaders.
Becky G: A Latina Trailblazer in Sports Ownership
Becky G’s involvement in Angel City FC goes beyond a business move. It’s a commitment to creating opportunities for young women in sports.
“Sports, music, and culture have always been deeply connected. And as a Latina, I’m so proud to be part of this movement that is elevating our representation in the game,” Becky G said.
She emphasized that her goal is to build a lasting legacy for future generations of Latinas in sports.
“My primary interest is more than just a team. But rather on creating opportunities for the next generation of young women in sports, ensuring they see themselves in these spaces and feel empowered to dream big,” Becky G said.
Another Latina sports icon, Diana Flores, the captain of Mexico’s national flag football team and an NFL Global Ambassador, presented Becky G with the Pionera Award.
Why Becky G’s Story Matters in Sports
Becky G has been passionate about soccer since childhood. Growing up in Inglewood, California, she played the game and loved it. However, she never imagined a world where women could play at a professional level, let alone own a team.
During her acceptance speech, Becky G spoke about the influence of her family’s hard work on her own relentless drive.
“My family was made of valet workers, busboys, and gardeners. They are my greatest source of inspiration … of what it is to be a hard worker,” Becky G told FOX 11.
Her involvement with Angel City FC is part of a larger movement of Latina leaders in sports ownership, joining names like Eva Longoria, America Ferrera, and Mia Hamm, who are also part of the ownership group.
Latinos And the Future of the Sports Industry
The Latinos in Sports™ Awards weren’t just about celebrating achievements—they were about addressing Latino underrepresentation in sports leadership.
“The sports industry is at a tipping point,” said Xavier A. Gutierrez, co-founder of Latinos in Sports™ and the first Latino CEO in NHL history. “Latinos, especially younger generations, are the fastest-growing fanbase, most engaged consumers, and a driving economic force. Yet, we remain underrepresented in leadership and decision-making roles.”
The event also featured two key industry panels. “The Power of Latinas in Sports” featured Diana Flores and Blanca Gonzalez (SVP & GM of WSS / Footlocker) and was moderated by CNBC’s Deirdre Bosa. Similarly, “Latinos in Sports: The LA Advantage” highlighted executives from the LA Galaxy, Chargers, Rams, and Showtime Sports, discussing how Latino engagement fuels LA’s sports economy.
A Commitment to the Next Generation
Latinos in Sports™ closed the night with a major announcement—Loyola Marymount University unveiled the first-ever Sports Studies minor within its Latino Studies program. According to Latinos in Sports™, this initiative aims to prepare the next generation of Latino sports executives, strategists, and industry leaders.
From Becky G’s leadership in women’s sports to LMU’s investment in Latino representation in sports careers, the night reinforced one truth: Latinos are shaping the future of sports, on and off the field.
