Sometimes, less is more. Colombian superstar Shakira goes by this motto when it comes to beauty. Throughout her career, the world’s favorite baranquillera has built her iconic image with this mindset. Her secret? She keeps things natural and swears by a few holy grail products.

Talking to Allure to celebrate the launch of isima, her new hair care brand, Shakira shared the scoop on how she achieves her signature look. She also reflected on how her outlook on beauty has evolved over time.

Shakira is confident in her own skin

As a music and entertainment icon, Shakira has shaped her presence through an identifiable and authentic style. Since her debut, the singer has unapologetically embraced the texture of her hair and kept her makeup relatively simple. Even in eras where trends leaned on full and elaborate glam, Shakira was her own makeup artist and stuck to a simpler look.

This stems from her need to feel comfortable on stage. “When it comes to beauty and when it comes to performing, I need to feel as natural as possible,” she told Allure. “I need to be as organic as possible because the way I move is like that.”

However, according to Shakira, what has changed is her approach and how she achieves the looks. While in the 2000s, she opted for bleaching her hair, in this decade, the singer has focused on prioritizing hair health. Meanwhile, her self-executed makeup has turned even more minimal. “Back then, when I was younger, I think I took even more time to get ready,” she said in the same interview. “I think the lack of experience, probably, and the lack of confidence made me wear a lot more makeup and be extra concerned. Now I’m a little more confident.”

Breaking down Shakira’s beauty routine

So what are the products behind Shakira’s iconic beauty? For one thing, the “She Wolf” singer achieves her captivating eye look with a shockingly affordable mascara. The product is none other than the L’Oréal Paris Voluminous Original Volume Building Mascara. It retails for less than $10, and, according to Shakira, she has been using it for over 20 years. “To me, it’s the best one,” she said.

Behind Shak’s curls

As for her hair, Shak takes care of her signature mane with products by isima. The Latin-rooted and science-backed brand carries formulas that don’t oversimplify textures and recognize hair diversity.

One of them is the Delicia Reparative Hair Oil, which tackles damage and boosts shine. This product is formulated with Chilean rosehip seed oil and Hemisqualane, made from Brazilian sugar cane. Shakira uses it to control frizz and add shine to her hair. “The scent is out of this world,” she shared. This is something that I use almost every day, and definitely for every show.

Another go-to for Shakira is the Curls Don’t Lie Curl Perfector. This styling cream defines and hydrates textured hair, delivering bouncing, shining, and smooth curls, coils, and waves.  “This is what I used to define my curls before a show. And yeah, believe it or not, this is called Curls Don’t Lie,” said Shak with a smile.

Championing Latin-friendly beauty

Shakira’s hair care brand places the Latin community and their beauty at the core. The Latin community spans a broad spectrum of people, whose needs often go overlooked. As the isima website explains, instead of settling for less, the singer partnered with science experts to deliver inclusive and effective hair care formulas.

“I’ve watched friends, family, and many other women who, like me, spent years trying every new product available to find the right one,” she said. “I have always felt like there are a lot of products out there, but nothing to meet the challenges that come with complex hair and multiple textures.”

But Shak is not only championing Latin-friendly beauty with her brand. She has also supported Latina-owned products, bringing the spotlight to the region’s beauty technology and innovation. Back in March, for example, the singer posted a video using a makeup setting spray by Naba Cosmetics. The Colombian product went viral instantly, proving Shakira’s power and showcasing her support for women’s entrepreneurial activities.
