After 22 years of marriage, Alicia Villarreal says she’s finally free. But in her own words, she’s still living “a nightmare.” The Mexican singer confirmed the end of her marriage to entertainment producer Cruz Martínez in an interview with Ventaneando, as reported by The Latin Times.

“We’ve reached the end of a first cycle that had to be closed and concluded well,” she told the program. “Yes, it was important to reach that point of achieving my freedom. I needed to get out of where I felt that hadn’t gone well for me.”

Villarreal’s legal divorce was finalized on August 6 through a virtual hearing, according to Univision. However, she’s still in the middle of asset division and a pending lawsuit accusing Martínez of domestic violence, robbery, and attempted femicide.

Alicia Villarreal And A Divorce That Took Years To Finalize

The singer revealed she began the divorce process back in 2023, but it was complicated by the fact that her marriage was registered in the United States. “I had to do a lot of things here, paperwork, and that doesn’t happen quickly,” she told Ventaneando. “We worked, but at a very forced pace. We formed a great team that we were able to achieve.”

While the legal separation is now official, El Salvador.com reported that the divorce did not resolve the allegations of violence. Villarreal first went public with those claims in February 2025, when she made the internationally recognized “Signal for Help” on stage during a concert in Michoacán, just hours before filing a formal complaint against Martínez in Nuevo León.

The Legal Case Against Cruz Martínez Is Still Ongoing

According to AL DÍA Dallas, Martínez faces three criminal charges: domestic violence, attempted femicide, and robbery. He failed to appear in court earlier this year, leading Mexican authorities to declare him a fugitive. His legal team, led by attorney Camille Vásquez, later obtained an injunction and is awaiting a new court date.

Villarreal says she will take the case “to the last consequences” despite her fear. “When I’m not working, I prefer to be at home,” she told the outlet. “I worry about my children because being alone is not easy for me.”

Alicia Villarreal Opens Up About Her Children

Throughout this process, Villarreal’s three children, Melanie, from her relationship with actor Arturo Carmona, and Ángelo and Félix, with Martínez, have been a source of strength. “Melenie gives me advice, takes me to the spa, or my son calls me because he wants to see me,” she shared with AL DÍA Dallas. “I think that’s what leaves your heart more full.”

She admitted the separation was necessary. “Now I have to face it and be responsible until the end. My children didn’t understand it as much before, but now there’s more harmony,” she said.

A New Chapter With Music And Healing

Alicia Villarreal is currently in psychological therapy as she works through what she describes as a “complex” process. At the same time, she is releasing new music. On August 8, she dropped “Maldita Billetera” in collaboration with Lila Downs, a track that pays tribute to the late Paquita la del Barrio, according to AL DÍA Dallas.

“This song came from conversations I had with Paquita,” Villarreal said. “The arrangement sounds a lot like her… It’s an homage with love, and it still unites us even though she’s not with us.”

For Villarreal, the divorce marks the legal end of her marriage. But the fight for justice and her safety is still unfolding.
