WATCH: Belinda Channels Paquita La Del Barrio in a Show-Stopping Vive Latino Performance
Belinda is on a roll. The Spanish-Mexican singer has been all over our social media feeds for the last couple of weeks. Between a new collaboration with the Filipino girl group BINI and a performance at Vive Latino, the “Sapito” singer sneaked the time to pay homage to Paquita La Del Barrio.
Belinda Covers “Rata de dos patas”
On March 16, Belinda hit the stage at the annual Vive Latino music festival. As the name suggests, the event is one of Latin America’s biggest platforms for Hispanic acts. Belinda was invited to perform on Amazon Music’s tribute stage, “La música Pa’ Mandar A Volar.” The show also featured big names in the Latin American music scene, including Daniela Romo, Yuri, and María José. The lineup performed some of their own and other artists’ best-known ballads and pop songs to great acclaim.
Belinda, however, took the spotlight with a rendition of Paquita La Del Barrio’s anthem, “Rata de dos patas.” ICYMI, Paquita La Del Barrio, passed away on February 17, leaving a legacy of empowerment and calling out toxic men.
The audience received Belinda’s reprisal of the song with loud cheers. The iconic song, one of Paquita’s most recognized discographic pearls, got everyone singing along.
A Stylish Tribute
Belinda didn’t spare on her stage outfit. Her look was littered with references to Paquita and her love for Mexican culture.
The singer wore a striped power suit with the words “I Love Paquita” embroidered on the back. Juan Carlos Plascencia styled the ensemble, which was adorned with sequins and accessorized with statement rosary necklaces. Belinda also sported an array of metal rings and a red rose on the lapel of her blazer.
Legends All-Around
To make the tribute even more special, Belinda was accompanied on stage by legendary musicians such as Enrique Rangel Arroyo (Cafe Tacvba), Bon Lara, Alfonso André (Caifanes), Sergio Mendoza and Camilo Lara.
On Instagram, the singer shared her excitement. “What a fucking honor to be able to share the stage with these great rock figures,” she wrote. “[We] honored one of the most important women in our Mexican music, irreverent, with a unique, unmatched, and unrepeatable personality! We love you, Paquita!”
Beli Is All About Girl Power
But Belinda’s homage to Paquita didn’t end there. On March 18, the star took to social media to share pictures of another Paquita-inspired outfit. The look tapped into the fan aesthetic, featuring a black T-shirt printed with Paquita’s face. And yes, that’s the fashion item we never knew we needed in our wardrobe. Beli combined the look with a pink faux fur coat and matching boots.
She also took the post as a chance to promote her newest song, “Blink Twice.” The collaboration with the P-pop sensation BINI is the first pop music crossover between a Mexican solo star and a girl group from the Philippines. The track is described as a “cultural fusion” of Latin and Southeast Asian music in a girly but empowering remix.
Belinda’s message was loud and clear: she’s all about honoring and supporting her fellow women artists, regardless of the generations and nationalities. We vibe with that.
