Carmen Carrera is showing up in one of Bravo’s most famous franchises on “The Real Housewives of Miami” (RHOM). Her inclusion in the show is a refreshing and exciting dose of trans representation on the show. Carrera has used her fame and platform to push for LGBTQ+ rights and bring trans visibility wherever she goes. This new opportunity is bringing trans visibility to new heights.

Carmen Carrera showing up in this season of “The Real Housewives of Miami”

The trans model and former “RuPaul’s Drag Race” contestant showed up in the kind of glam we have come to expect from her. She isn’t part of the official cast, but she is someone who is being spotlighted in the show. It is unclear how much she will be included moving forward, but she is a close friend of Kiki Barth. During a confessional during the seventh episode, Kiki talked about knowing Carrera from modeling.

Carrera is seen with the RHOM cast during the 2024 National LGBTQ+ Task Force Gala in October. Clearly, it makes sense for Barth to bring Carrera to the event. While there, Carrera engages with Julia Lemigova, the first LGBTQ+ housewife on RHOM. As they chat, Lemigova asks if Carrera walked for Victoria’s Secret.

“I almost did,” Carrera told Lemigova. “About 10 years ago there was a petition for me to walk the show. But they didn’t allow it, they were like, ‘No transgenders allowed.’”

In 2013, a petition to get Carrera onto the Victoria’s Secret runway gained almost 50,000 signatures. Despite the overwhelming support, the famed lingerie brand didn’t make Carrera an angel. That hasn’t stopped Carrera from making a name for herself in the modeling world, and we love to see her continue to succeed.

The moment between Lemigova and Carrera has a really interesting hidden meaning. Lemigova is married to former tennis professional Martina Navratilova. For those who don’t know, Navratilova is known for sharing extremely transphobic views on social media. In fact, some fans of RHOM are hoping that Carrera might eventually replace Lemigova so that they don’t have to see Navratilova anymore.

Fans have been speculating that Carrera would be on RHOM for over a year

Bravo leaned into the rumors, and Carrera was included in multiple cast appearances leading up to the seventh season. Yet, when the list of the official cast was revealed, Carrera was not included. Fans of the show have been asking for the model and activist to be a part of the cast, and the brief appearance so far is exciting for them to witness.

Carrera on RHOM is another example of how the show is the most diverse in the The Real Housewives universe. However, the fact that she is not included as a full cast member is another moment where the show sidelined the LGBTQ+ community.

In previous seasons, fans watched Elaine Lancaster, a drag queen who fought Marysol Patton, and trans socialite Lauren Foster have moments. Yet, the show hasn’t brought new LGBTQ+ women to the official cast. The chatter on social media, however, is clear. Fans would rather see Carrera join as a cast member while Lemigova and her wife can fade into the background.
