There is a lot of talk right now about the infamous Epstein Files. President Donald Trump and Republicans talked endlessly about a “client list” of people who traveled to Little St. James Island. They claimed that Jeffrey Epstein participated in the human sex trafficking of young girls for powerful men and maintained a list. President Trump and Republicans demanded for years that officials make the list public. Now, the narrative has changed, and Representative Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-NY14) called it out on social media.

Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez is calling out the sudden turnabout on the Epstein Files

The New York politician took to X (formerly Twitter) to join the growing discourse over the Epstein Files scandal that is engulfing the Trump administration. In her post, AOC says, “Wow who would have thought that electing a rapist would have complicated the release of the Epstein Files?”

The Epstein Files have been of major interest for Trump loyalists both in the federal government and in his base. In 2024, President Trump said in numerous interviews that he would release the files. He also pointed out that it was interesting officials hadn’t made the files public yet.

“It’s very interesting, isn’t it?” Trump told podcaster Lex Fridman. “It probably will be [made public], by the way, probably.” He added: “I’d have no problem with it.”

The Trump administration is trying to force people to stop talking about the Epstein Files

In February, Attorney General Pam Bondi made promises to the American public that the Epstein client list was on her desk for review. In an interview on Fox News, she told the hosts that the list existed and that things were going to be coming out.

“Jesse, there are well over, and this will make you sick, 200 victims, 200. Well over. Two hundred fifty, actually,” Attorney General Bondi told Jesse Watters in an interview earlier this year. “So, we have to make sure that their identity is protected and their personal information, but other than that, I think that tomorrow. The personal information of victims. Other than that, I think tomorrow, Jesse, breaking news right now. You’re going to see some Epstein information being released by my office.”

She promised that the information that was going to be coming forward was flight logs and names. Yet, no information ever materialized then.

AOC’s post has predictably angered MAGA loyalists

Her post has spawned several responses calling for everything from an investigation by the Department of Justice to libel lawsuits. The faction of the Republican Party that called several Democratic politicians rapists and pedophiles are now angry that she mentioned rape in her tweet.

Former President Bill Clinton was the subject of several memes trying to tie him to the Epstein files circulated over the years. Yet, AOC’s post has made Trump fiercest defenders clutch their pearls.

However, it is key to know that AOC’s tweet likely doesn’t fall under defamation. A jury found President Trump liable for sexually abusing and defaming E. Jean Carroll. Carroll took President Trump to court for rape and defamation. While the court ruled that he was liable for sexual abuse and defamation under New York law, the judge in the case added context.

“The difference between Ms. Carroll’s allegedly defamatory statements — that Mr. Trump ‘raped’ her as defined in the New York Penal Law — and the ‘truth’ — that Mr. Trump forcibly digitally penetrated Ms. Carroll — are minimal,” Judge Lewis A. Kaplan wrote in a ruling. “Both are felonious sex crimes.” Judge Kaplan added: “Indeed, both acts constitute ‘rape’” as people know the term rape to be used in everyday language.
