Beyond Casa Azul: The New Frida Kahlo Museum Promises No Glass Cases, Just Emotion
There’s a new reason to head to Coyoacán this fall. Especially if you’re a Frida Kahlo fan who thought they’d seen it all. Just blocks away from the iconic Casa Azul, a second museum honoring Kahlo’s life and legacy will open its doors this September. And this time, it’s personal.
The New Frida Kahlo Museum Will Open in Casa Roja—A Home Rooted in Her Family’s History
According to ARTnews, the Museo Casa Kahlo will be housed in the Casa Roja. The private residence was originally acquired by Kahlo’s parents and passed down through generations. Kahlo’s grandniece, Mara Romeo Kahlo, donated the property to turn it into a museum. The goal is to tell a more intimate story of the artist. “Frida’s legacy belongs to the world, but it begins here—on this land, in these homes, and in the culture that shaped her,” Romeo Kahlo said in a statement.
The New York-based Rockwell Group has led the museum’s design, but its soul is deeply Mexican. Unlike Casa Azul, which has long functioned as a biographical space dedicated to Frida and Diego Rivera’s shared life, Casa Roja will dive into Frida’s personal origins—her family, her early artistic voice, and the cultural figures who influenced her.
What Sets the New Frida Kahlo Museum Apart from Casa Azul?
This isn’t a sequel—it’s a reimagining. As reported by Architectural Digest México, the new museum won’t ask you to stare into glass cases. Instead, it promises an immersive experience where “colors spill over, projections surround you, and emotions take form.” Every room is curated as a sensory universe that touches on Kahlo’s pain, politics, desire, and radical spirit—unfiltered.
According to Artsy, the museum will house never-before-seen pieces, including a piece of embroidery Kahlo made at age five, her first oil painting, and a recently discovered mural. The museum’s leadership states that the goal is to tell a version of Frida’s story that is neither overly romanticized nor consumed by iconography. As Mara Hentschel Romeo, one of Kahlo’s great-grandnieces, told Vogue: “This museum isn’t just about her work—it’s about her world. It’s about how the people closest to her shaped who she became.”
Inside the Vision Behind Museo Casa Kahlo
The museum’s aesthetic isn’t a replica of Kahlo’s world—it’s a conversation with it. AD México reports that Rockwell Group worked to avoid literal recreations, instead designing architectural and emotional spaces that resonate with Kahlo’s spirit of rebellion and raw expression.
Adán García Fajardo, currently the academic director at Mexico City’s Museum of Memory and Tolerance, will be the director of the Museo Casa Kahlo. According to ARTnews, Fundación Kahlo, a nonprofit launched by the family in New York, will fund the project. The foundation is also planning new public initiatives, including the Kahlo Art Prize and a grant program called Las Ayudas.
When Will the New Frida Kahlo Museum Open?
The official opening date is September 27, 2025—coinciding with the 70th anniversary of Kahlo’s death. While the Kahlo family hasn’t disclosed the museum’s exact address yet, they confirmed that it will be located just a few blocks from Casa Azul in Coyoacán.
Currently, there is no publicly available information on ticket pricing or guided tours. However, these details are expected to be released closer to the opening date.
