‘I Still Have a Lot to Learn’: Karol G Reacts to Backlash Over ‘+57’ Lyrics
Karol G’s latest track, “+57,” meant to be a Colombian party anthem, has ignited controversy instead. The song, featuring top Colombian artists like J Balvin, Maluma, Feid, Ryan Castro, Blessd, and DFZM, released on November 7, has been criticized for lyrics some say promote the sexualization of minors.
One line, sung by Feid and Maluma, describes a woman as a “mamacita since she was 14.” The backlash led Karol G to issue a public apology. Critics, including government agencies and fans, voiced concerns over the song’s messaging.
The Colombian Institute of Family Welfare Speaks Out
“+57” aimed to unite great Colombian talent in a celebration. However, the song, which nods to the Colombian phone code, left many speechless. From references to unprotected sex to the crude objectification of an underage girl, the collaboration has caught the attention of international organizations and fans alike.
In response to the song, the Colombian Institute of Family Welfare (ICBF), an organization focused on children’s welfare, expressed serious concerns. General Director Astrid Cáceres Cárdenas released a statement, saying the lyrics contribute to the “sexualization of childhood in our country.” She highlighted how the lyrics can perpetuate harmful perceptions.
Rolling Stone further reported that the ICBF pointed to a broader issue. The institute linked the lyric’s message to human trafficking in Colombia. The magazine’s Martín Toro added that the song “perpetuates the sexualization of minors,” echoing public criticism of the track.
Karol G Responds: “I Still Have a Lot to Learn”
Following the backlash, Karol G took to Instagram to share her thoughts and apologize. The singer acknowledged the negative impact of the lyrics while stressing that her intentions were misunderstood.
“Unfortunately, the lyrics of a song, with which I sought to celebrate the union between artists and put to shine my people … were taken out of context,” she said. “None of the things said in the song have the direction they have been given. Nor was it said from that perspective. But I hear you, and I take responsibility, and I realize that I still have a lot to learn.” She added that the controversy had deeply affected her, saying, “I feel very affected, and I’m sorry from the bottom of my heart.”
Karol G’s Apology Comes in the Context of Her Long-Standing Advocacy for Women’s Rights
Through her Con Cora Foundation, established in 2022, she has worked to support underprivileged women with social, psychological, and economic resources. The foundation collaborates with organizations like She Is Foundation and Fundación Acción Interna to offer initiatives for female inmates and promote STEM education among young women.
Mixed Reactions from Fans and Fellow Artists
While Karol G’s apology resonated with some fans, others remained critical, calling for greater responsibility in music aimed at younger audiences. Despite the controversy, J Balvin and Feid publicly showed their support for Karol, with Balvin writing, “This doesn’t take away from your greatness.”
Meanwhile, some fans voiced their frustration over perceived double standards in the music industry. On social media, comments ranged from support to criticism, with many expressing concern over the potential for songs to normalize problematic themes.
